How to use your Crucial X6 or X8 Portable SSD with your computer

Step 1. Connect the X6 or X8 to your computer

First, connect the included USB cable into the end of the Crucial portable SSD. Plug the other end into a USB-C port on your computer. If you don’t have a USB-C port on your computer, you’ll need to use the USB-C to USB-A adapter.

Note: Make sure when using the USB-A adapter that the alignment marks on the adapter match up with the alignment mark on the cable. If these marks are not aligned, read and write performance of the drive is reduced.

Step 2. Check that the drive is working with your computer

For Windows, you should be able to see and access your X6 or X8 in File Explorer. Once in File Explorer, you should see under “My Computer” that the “Crucial X6 or X8” drive is present. You can then go into your drive and move, copy, or delete files. Step 3. Disconnecting your X6 or X8

Crucial portable SSDs can go with you – wherever you travel. When the time comes, you need to disconnect your X6 or X8 properly to ensure you don’t lose any data.

• For Windows, look to the lower right notification area of the taskbar. You can select the up arrow which will expand the icons in the systray. Right-click the eject media icon (which looks like a USB thumb drive), prompting a list of removable media devices will be displayed. Select the X6 or X8 and eject when the default message tells you it's safe.
• For Mac OS, there are two ways to safely disconnect your Crucial portable SSD:         
  • First, you can find the X6 or X8 icon on the desktop. Select it, then press the command button and the “E” key simultaneously to eject the drive. 
  • The second method is to use finder, located on the left side of the window. Find the X6 or X8 listed under devices and click on the eject icon to the right. At that point, all you need to do is select the eject icon to the right of the drive.
